The best birthday cake is chosen for the person it is for. A few directions that work:

For children

Character and theme cakes — cartoons, superheroes, animals, cars, princesses. These
read clearly in photographs and children recognise them instantly. Choose one strong
theme rather than several mixed together.

For a partner or spouse

Floral designs, heart shapes, and edible photo prints of a shared memory. Minimalist
designs in one or two colours often look more considered than elaborate ones.

For parents

Classic flavours — butterscotch, chocolate, mixed fruit — with restrained decoration
and a clear message. Sometimes simple is the more thoughtful choice.

For an office birthday

A bento cake. Compact, easy to carry, sized for two to four people, and it does not
leave half a cake behind in the break room.

For a milestone birthday

Tiered cakes, or a designer cake with a sculpted element marking the number. These
need more lead time, so plan ahead.

Sizing

Plan roughly 100–150g per person. A 1kg cake serves 8 to 12 people comfortably.
